Swanson started out in 1996 as a bodybuilder, but switched to powerlifting because, according to her, larger, more muscular women had fallen out of favor in bodybuilding.[3] She is currently the only woman ever to squat over 800 pounds, bench 600 pounds or total over 2000 pounds. She has also competed in strongwoman contests, starting in 2002.
